Transformation Statement
Although the arrangements in my paintings and drawings differ from each
other, each arrangement follows an individual preconceived idea characterized
by regularity, repetition, consistency, and continuity. Individual parts
are not necessarily in themselves important but are logical and relevant
within their particular arrangement.
I see my art as a kind of continuum, with one project acting as the premise
for the next. I search for the innumerable possibilities in each stage
of work. An acrylic drawing on paper may be one complete step in itself
or it may be a stage to a large painting on canvas. One idea gives birth
to another and is constantly in movement toward the following idea. I
have been interested in mutability and transformation for almost three
decades.
To produce my abstract pieces, I experiment with different spatial relationships
and media to reveal new dynamics of movement and tension. This spirit
of investigation is an integral part of my creative process. In part,
I lean toward abstraction to communicate the essence of form. I translate
figures from the physical world into essential abstracted shapes-a process
I call "the story of the work." As I work, I find new ways to reinforce
the role of abstraction in current times.
To this end, I work to convey shifting viewpoints and establish a new
visual language. The search for a new painted reality is endless. Nothing
is absolutely determined. I could go on painting each painting forever
if it were possible.
